Training Cycling Coaches

left What does National Standard Consist of? right

The courses involve both theoretical and practical sessions. In all cases the participant will need to show evidence of competence in managing groups of children. This can be done either by being a qualified teacher or youth worker, or having a qualification that is assessed in group management such as a mountain leader's award. Or after taking the course completing 20 hours of assessed activity, supervised by someone who has one of these qualifications (they do not have to be qualified cyclists) or a named person in your area who is acceptable to BSCA.

  • Touring Leaders course (1 day course), which addresses all aspects of planning and taking a group of young people on tour, from a short day ride to a weeks youth hostelling.  Special emphasis on road safety, and how to safely negotiate the hazards of the road system.
  • Cycling Teaching certificate course (3 day course which incorporates the Touring leaders course) also deals with how to run small competitions safely.  It deals with competitive cycling, cyclo-cross and mountain biking, BMX, and cycle speedway, and more importantly where to get information from.  This course also includes a short written exam at the end of the third day.
  • Mountain Bike/Off Road Leaders course (2 day course) which deals with navigation and mechanics to a greater depth than the other courses.  Designed to enable leaders to take young people on tours of Rights of way and Bridleways, and get them back safely.  The course deals with problems of dangerous environments, and peaceful co-existence with other outdoor pursuits. Off road racing and competition are also covered.

All courses are continuously assessed in terms of demonstrating ability to handle groups, especially in the setting of goals and limitations appropriate to the age, aptitude and ability of young people.
